Marriage Under Attack

For years I have been seeking to help bring the family of faith together—to stand against the forces of darkness, deception, and destruction. If church leaders and all who profess faith in the Lord Jesus and God as Father do not stand in behalf of marriage, the preciousness of life, the value of freedom, and the personal responsibility essential to protect and preserve it, we will lose what the grace of God, truth, love, and great sacrifice has given us the privilege to enjoy.

God established the institution of marriage before the church. From this God-initiated relationship, all life is formed, birthed, and given priceless oversight. We do not replace what God supernaturally created and established with anything proposed by any person, people, government, or court. Family is the first vital cell of society. It is the foundation of government. Government did not create marriage. God did. Marriage predates government.

In a few days we face the possibility that the U.S. Supreme Court could release an opinion that marriage is not what God designed, but instead could include two people of the same sex. If that were to happen, the true meaning of marriage could be destroyed, children would be hurt, and our religious freedom would be threatened. This is very serious.

It is time for the church to draw a line in the sand, a line beyond which we will not go. Working with Mat Staver, Deacon Keith Fournier and several others, I am urging leaders to sign this excellent statement on marriage. I urge you to sign on with many concerned leaders from around the country to say you join them taking a stand to defend marriage.

Below is the statement we have written.

We Stand in Solidarity to Defend Marriage
and the Family and Society Founded Upon Them

We stand together as Christians in defense of marriage and the family and society founded upon them. While we come from a variety of communities and hold differing faith perspectives, we are united in our common faith in Jesus Christ.

We acknowledge that differences exist between us on important matters of religious doctrine and practice. But, on the matter of marriage, we stand in solidarity. As a nation, we have lost our moral compass. As a result, we are losing true freedom. We affirm together that there is a moral basis to a free society. Though we live in a secular society, together we reject relativism and secularism.

We affirm that marriage and family have been inscribed by the Divine Architect into the order of creation. Marriage is ontologically between one man and one woman, ordered toward the union of the spouses, open to children and formative of family. Family is the first vital cell of society; the first church, first school, first hospital, first economy, first government and first mediating institution of our social order. The future of a free and healthy society passes through marriage and the family.

Marriage as existing solely between one man and one woman was not an idea manufactured by the Christian Church. It precedes Christianity. Though affirmed, fulfilled, and elevated by Christian teaching, the truth that marriage can exist only between one man and one woman is not based on religion or revelation alone, but on the Natural Moral Law, written on the human heart and discernible through the exercise of reason.

This claim of the existence of such a Natural Moral Law is the ground upon which every great civilization has been built. It is the source of every authentic human and civil rights movement. This Natural Moral Law gives us the norms we need to build truly human and humane societies and govern ourselves. It should also inform our positive law or we will become lawless and devolve into anarchy.

Marriage is the preeminent and the most fundamental of all human social institutions. Civil institutions do not create marriage nor can they manufacture a right to marry for those who are incapable of marriage. In the words of the first book of the Bible, we read: “it is not good for man to be alone.” (Genesis 2:18) Society begins with marriage and the family.

Like many other concerned Americans, we await the opinion of the Supreme Court of the United States on two cases which open up the possibility that the institution of marriage will be further undermined by a judicial opinion. We pledge to stand together to defend  marriage as what it is, a bond between one man and one woman, intended for life, and open to the gift of children.

The institutions of civil government should defend marriage and not seek to undermine it. Government has long regulated marriage for the true common good. Examples, such as the age of consent, demonstrate such a proper regulation to ensure the free and voluntary basis of the marriage bond. Redefining the very institution of marriage is improper and outside the authority of the State. The Supreme Court has no authority to redefine marriage.

If the Supreme Court becomes the tool by which marriage is redefined in the positive law of this nation, the precedent established will leave no room for any limitation on what can constitute such a redefined notion of marriage. Conferring a moral and legal equivalency to same-sex couples by legislative or judicial fiat also sends the message that children do not need a mother and a father. It undermines their fundamental rights and threatens their security, stability, and future.

As Christian citizens united together, we will not stand by while the destruction of the institution of marriage unfolds in this nation we love. The Sacred Scriptures and unbroken teaching of the Church confirm that marriage is between one man and one woman. We stand together in solidarity to defend marriage and the family and society founded upon them. The effort to redefine marriage threatens the proper mediating role of the Church in society.

Experience and history have shown us that if the government redefines marriage to grant a legal equivalency to same-sex couples, that same government will then enforce such an action with the police power of the State. This will bring about an inevitable collision with religious freedom and conscience rights. We cannot and will not allow this to occur on our watch. Religious freedom is the first freedom in the American experiment for good reason.

Finally, the Supreme Court has no authority to redefine marriage and thereby weaken both the family and society. Unlike the Legislative Branch that has the power of the purse and the Executive Branch which has the figurative power of the sword, the Judicial Branch has neither. It must depend upon the Executive Branch for the enforcement of its decisions.

As the Supreme Court acknowledged in the 1992 decision of Planned Parenthood v. Casey, its power rests solely upon the legitimacy of its decisions in the eyes of the people. If the Supreme Court were to issue a decision that redefined marriage or provided a precedent on which to build

an argument to redefine marriage, the Supreme Court will thereby undermine its legitimacy. The Court will significantly decrease its credibility and impair the role it has assumed for itself as a moral authority. It will be acting beyond its proper constitutional role and contrary to the Natural Moral Law which transcends religions, culture, and time.

As Christians united together in defense of marriage, we pray that this will not happen. But, make no mistake about our resolve. While there are many things we can endure, redefining marriage is so fundamental to the natural order and the true common good that this is the line we must draw and one we cannot and will not cross.

The following statement by James gives testament to the historical conflicts which exists in our nation and around the world. Please read it again:

“God established the institution of marriage before the church. From this God-initiated relationship, all life is formed, birthed, and given priceless oversight. We do not replace what God supernaturally created and established with anything proposed by any person, people, government, or court. Family is the first vital cell of society. It is the foundation of government. Government did not create marriage. God did. Marriage predates government.”

The theme of James’ statement unveils the very soul of the Revelation of Jesus Christ and provides infallible evidence that he was Deity manifested in flesh and his government and kingdom is not of this world. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). He is revealing that he is the visible tabernacle of the Father, which is the absolute Word manifesting the fullness of the Godhead bodily. The Apostle Paul said, “For in Christ lives all the fullness (every attribute) of God (Creator, Elohim, Father) in a human body” (Colossians 2:9).

Paul again emphasized this revelation when he spoke about Jesus Christ and said “he is the image (the flesh) of the invisible God (Holy Spirit), the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him (including marriage) and for him: And he (the Word) is before all things, and by him (his revelation) all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father (the invisible Spirit, Elohim) that in him (Jesus Christ) should all fullness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven” (Colossians 1:15-20). (Do not be confused, this declaration is not making any type of reference to this earthly dominion or kingdom.)

The conflict exists between what Jesus Christ created and instituted in the beginning and what “the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil and Satan” (Revelation 20:2) has done to pervert that original creation. This is why these conflicts and spiritual warfare will not cease until the Prince of Peace establishes his kingdom once again on this earth. This is not his kingdom we are living in. The kingdom of Jesus Christ is not filled with sin, perversion, homosexuality, (legalized sodomy) abominations, secular humanistic politics, lies, deception, hypocrisy and death. Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world” (John 18:36).

This world and kingdom is Satan’s Eden. This is what he wanted in the Garden of Eden. He wanted to pervert everything which was created by the spoken word of the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. This is why you cannot mix secularist politics and human ideologies with the infallible word of Jesus Christ and expect a divine result. It will not work. It’s like planting toxic weeds and expecting nutritional food; the equation cannot work.

This is why marriage and every other revelation of Jesus Christ are under attack. Satan hates Jesus Christ, his word, his righteousness, and his Bride. The Declaration of Independence, as intentional as it was to “form a more perfect union” does not and cannot have the power of revelation to lead sinful creatures to “the way, and the truth, and the life”, which is the only perfect union. As our precious brother James stated, “We do not replace what God supernaturally created and established with anything proposed by any person, people, government, or court.” We are coming down to the final showdown between the divine Declaration of Jesus Christ and the secular Declaration of Independence. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Mark 13:31). This includes every earthly kingdom, nation, declaration, political entity, manmade religion, cult, and secular ideology.

Wake up Saints of the living God!!! The Declaration of Independence the Bride of Jesus Christ defends and lives by is found in Luke 4:18. Jesus stood in the synagogue and proclaimed, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.” This is “the way, the truth, and the life.”

  2. Thanks James for standing up for marriage between one man and one woman, and making sure same-sex marriage never becomes a reality across your nation through the action of your Supreme Court.

  3. James honestly I am not sure what churches are standing up against the government!! Preaching morality from the pulpit!! Not aware of any!! Do you know any???? Cause I might want to go to it!!! Glenn beck stated the other day that he thought if your church was not talking about the collapse of our society, like an abortion is wrong, that you should find a new church that is willing! I think to many churches today are worried about their 501c status to preach that way!! What do you think? I know God is calling me to do more than sign a petition!! Waiting patiently to know where he wants me to turn!

  4. Dearest Man of God, Thank you for being a steadfast leader willing to take a stand for RIGHTEOUSNESS/HOLINESS. Also as fellow intercessors our prayer ministry join with you in prayer to ask God our Father to stay His Hand concerning America. We are in serious trouble. We agree with you for the “REPENTANCE” of this great nation. Yours In Christ Jesus. Yvonne Sims

  5. Friend, Brethren,
It’s about time we stop setting on the sideline and
start speaking up for righteousness, rightness, sound the alarm in
Zion if need to be but idleness is not the prescription of the hour.
