Just before the first Christmas, the angels announced to the shepherds as they were joined by a vast heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased!” The shepherds set out to find and behold the Messiah. Their pursuit is the glorious pursuit. Discovering the Messiah personally is not only to be a priority, but it is the only way to peace in our personal lives and on this earth.

“Be angry, and sin not.”[1] The Scripture goes on to say we are not to let the sun go down on our wrath.

This Thanksgiving, many Americans are hurting. Though most of us have what we need, millions of others are either without work or have jobs but are still struggling to make ends meet and provide for their families. Even as we thank God for His blessings our hearts break for those who suffer and we continually pray for God to meet their needs while also seeking ways we can help.

We hear from many American Christians who seem to be losing hope. They’re not necessarily losing hope in their ultimate salvation; but they are filled with dread about the future.

It’s not too late, but it is much later than most people think. These are the “last days,” but do not get caught up in exactly how many days or any foolish time predictions. We see clearly that America is reaping what has been sown. The cost of forsaking God is always heavy and the consequences great. European nations are quaking while America trembles with joblessness, economic insecurity, runaway national debt, and a leadership crisis.

For the past month, thousands of Americans have “occupied” a park near Wall Street in New York, as well as many other American cities. The so-called Occupy Wall Street (OWS) throngs have had a hard time agreeing on a coherent list of demands, but they seem to agree that America’s free enterprise system—or what’s left of it—has got to go.

The World Series has been exciting, especially for those of us in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. Since we became close friends with Josh and Katie Hamilton, Betty has taken a serious interest. She is a real sports fan! I believe she actually thinks she coached the Dallas Mavericks to an NBA championship and now she will manage the Texas Rangers to the World Series victory. In a day when politicians make promises of reform, we must remember one timeless truth: the true hope for America lies in the effective witness and influence of the local church.

Love is the greatest force on earth to resist, limit, and ultimately halt evil’s deadly progression. This is the greatest hour in human history for us to express the power of God’s love “not in word only, but in deed.” Believers can inspire effective action in all areas of influence including making a positive impact on the federal government. Effective government serves the people and protects them from harm.

“Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land…”[1]
